SC State Championship Chili Cookoff

Indian Land hosts second SC State Championship Chili Cookoff.

Do you think you have a world class chili Recipe? Are you ready to throw down with some champion chili chefs? Then get ready to stoke the fires and stir the pot at the 6th Annual Indian Land Fall Festival.

As part of the Festival, the Indian Land Rotary Club will again host the second sactioned State Championship Chili Cookoff for South Carolina.  Many of last year’s cooks will be returning and new entrants are sending in reservations to insure space. The top finishers can qualify to compete in the international competition, held annually for 30 years in Terlingua, Texas.

The cook-off is sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI), a non-profit organization that oversees chili cook-offs in the US and overseas. The principles of CASI are to promote chili, have fun and raise money for charity. Prizes include trophies and bragging rights, but no cash prizes are allowed under CASI rules. Prizes are awarded for Texas style, freestyle, people’s choice and showmanship. Last year’s winner was a first time cook from Indian Land, Steve Wasco, who made the trip to Terlingua. More information about CASI, including recipes from previous Champions is available at www.chili.org.

Entry fee is only $20 for the Texas, or competition style chili and $10 for freestyle. Texas style is meat and gravy only, while freestyle allows vegetable and beans. Cooks are encouraged to make extra so that the public can sample and vote for their choice. Complete the entry application and payment can be mailed, or by clicking the PayPal link at the bottom of this page.  For your convienence, a short guide to cooking competition chili is available.
